A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
